Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a kid. The aunt was on during the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an avenue for action. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the art of. Although DuVernay lived living in Compton with her family, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. Her summers in Alabama's Selma inspire her later to make the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. From this position she started her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
